Technology in Careers: The Real World


As this new school year begins, I find high school graduation becoming a distant memory as college graduation rapidly approaches. Unfortunately at the end of this four year journey, the real world awaits instead of a pile of cards from long lost relatives offering gifts of money and congratulatory statements. For someone as undecided as myself, it’s helpful to take a moment to do some job searching in order to see what experience companies are currently looking for. After all, who wants to pay for school just to get a job to turn around and pay for school? I’d rather do something I’m truly passionate about.

For this CAP 105 assignment, I researched ten jobs in or around West Michigan that interested me, analyzed what areas I fell short in as an applicant, and looked for ways to gain experience.

  1. Content Writer

Digital Limelight Media: Link to Job Post

  • Experience with SEO and search engine marketing strategies, WordPress, and knowledge of the plastic surgery or medical industry.
  • Proven technical writing skills with an eye for the creative
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to take direction from other team members
  • Marketing experience a plus
    • My game plan for becoming a stronger candidate for this position is to familiarize myself with the medical industry in order to be more knowledgeable on the subject. I will also look for ways to gain marketing experience through an internship this year and continue to learn more about navigating and using WordPress.
  1. Social/Digital Media Specialist

  • 2 years experience successfully managing social media strategy and content for organizations with a high traffic social media presence.
  • Experience should include building, launching, and managing social media communities, social applications, and driving messaging across social avenues.
  • Excellent writer/editor, well-organized and detail-oriented with experience managing online marketing and outreach campaigns using consistent branding.
  • 3-5 years experience social media strategy and content for organizations with a high traffic social media presence using a consistent brand voice preferred. Must have strong customer service skills with the comfort level of working with all staff levels.
    • I currently do not have any experience working with branding or managing social media on a corporate level. My game plan is to get an internship that allows me to gain experience with managing social media and strategies so that I can build up my résumé.
  1. Part Time Event Operations Associate

  • Experience in sales or customer service
  • Knowledge with Facebook and Twitter social media platforms
    • I currently do not have a lot of work experience in dealing with customer service so in order to become a stronger candidate for this position I will look for opportunities to gain this experience. My game plan again is to find an internship this year to gain the experience and knowledge required for a job like this.

4. Managing Content Creator

  • Attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Have a working understanding of SEO techniques/practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or a related field.
  • Experience with copywriting.
  • Interest in, knowledge of and an on-going curiosity and passion for the coffee and food industry.
  • Experience in the food and/or coffee industry a plus.
    • I do not have much experience in working in the food/coffee industry or experience with copywriting. In order to be a better candidate for this position I will work on understanding SEO techniques and put together a file of my sample writing for résumés.

5. Marketing Associate

  • A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Business or Marketing
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as research skills
  • Proficiency in social media, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, HootSuite
  • Experience in updating websites and posting blogs, especially within WordPress CMS
  • Experience in managing Google AdWords beneficial
  • Experience with MS office, including proficiency in Word and Excel
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is beneficial
  • HTML coding experience or education a plus
  • The ability to prioritize and work with multiple deadlines without supervision

    • I plan on learning how to use Google AdWords, HootSuite, and become more familiar with using Microsoft Excel this year in order to become a better candidate for this position. Hopefully this class will allow me to gain some experience with these different sites and programs. I would also like to learn more about the Adobe Creative Suite program and HTML coding as I am not familiar with them at all through the use of online tutorials and a possible internship.
  1. Digital Marketing Analyst

  • Advanced capabilities with Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to work in a very fast paced, ever-changing environment

    • I currently do not have any experience in working with Google Analytics and eCommerce tracking or advanced capabilities with Microsoft Excel. In order to become a better candidate for this position I will look into expanding my skills with these programs and work with online tutorials/classes to gain experience.

7.   Digital Marketing Strategist/Copywriter

  • Minimum 1 year advertising/marketing experience required, 2+ years preferred in copywriting and digital marketing
  • Demonstrated creative copywriting experience
  • Excellent vocabulary, spelling, editing, and proofreading abilities
  • Google Adwords and Google Analytics Certifications preferred
  • Experience with social posts and paid advertising on Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms
  • Working knowledge of Expression Engine, WordPress, or other content management systems
  • Passion for the marketing and advertising industry
    • I lack the year of advertising/copywriting experience required for this job. I am also not very familiar in working with Google Adwords and Google Analytics. My game plan for becoming a better candidate for this job is to gain knowledge in Expression Engine and to get an internship that allows me to get experience in working with digital marketing and creative copywriting as well as the other programs listed.

8.   Communications Coordinator

  • Strong verbal and written communication capabilities.
  • Proficient with business application software such as Microsoft Office Suite, graphic design software, such as Adobe InDesign and photo editing software, such as Photoshop.
  • Preparation of fully animated PowerPoint presentations. Ability to write and manage website content, experience with WordPress, SEO & Google Analytics, a plus.
  • Design & layout experience for both web and print applications. Creative copywriting to effectively describe products. Ability to conduct web-based research and compile summaries as needed.
    • I have some experience in working with Photoshop, but lack experience with other photo editing softwares. I would like to learn how to properly use InDesign, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Analytics in order to be a better candidate for this position by getting an internship for the experience and taking classes on the programs.

     9.   Sales and Marketing Assistant

  • The ability to develop effective written and visual materials within the brand guidelines of the company is critical to success in this position.
  • Experience self-managing multiple projects and deadlines through effective project management tools is required.
  • Adobe Indesign, Photoshop, WordPress, and/or experience preferred, but not required.
    • In order to be a better candidate for this position I would like to learn how to properly utilize Adobe InDesign and I would also like to learn how to better navigate WordPress so that I can stick out amongst applicants by spending more time using the site and watching tutorials. Hopefully this class will give me some experience in using these programs throughout this semester.

   10.   Brand Marketing Communications Assistant

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Advertising or Journalism
  • Minimum (0-5) years of relevant experience in marketing management with proven success.
  • Must have wide range of experience and understanding of the marketing including product positioning, pricing, promotions, market research, sales and distribution.
  • Should be a proactive self-starter with the ability to work independently. Need strong ability to set priorities, solve problems, and be resourceful under pressure.
    • I do not have the required experience in marketing management for this job or my Bachelor’s degree just yet, but I do possess many of the other qualifications. I would like to gain some experience through an internship and take advantage of the paid training that comes with this position. My game plan to become a better candidate for this position is to gain some experience in marketing and communications in order to stand out amongst applicants.
